3 Tips for Becoming More Visible on Instagram
It’s really easy to feel like no one is noticing you on Instagram.
There are so many brands out there that you start to wonder if you’re invisible. But with some strategy and intention, you can get your name in front of more eyes. Not just any eyes, but those who are genuinely interested in you and what you have to offer.
3 Tips for Becoming More Visible on Instagram
1. Optimize your bio
The purpose of your bio is to show who you are and what makes you so special. This is some precious real estate and it’s so common for us to fall into paralysis trying to think of 120 characters that describe you perfectly. It doesn’t have to be that hard!
A great bio will do two things: show off your brand’s voice and prompt your viewer to action.
You want your audience to immediately feel a connection with you, and the BEST way to do that is to be authentic. Be you. People are much more likely to interact with a human than they are a brand.
Using a CTA (call to action) is a fantastic way to prompt an action. I love getting things, don’t you? Offer your viewers a free gift in exchange for a small step on their end. “Click here for your free ebook” or “Head to my blog for your free gift guide.”
Bonus tip: did you know your tagline is searchable? That’s the bold text under your picture which normally shows your name. This is the perfect place to tell your audience what you do. A great example of this would be “Susie 🌹 Wedding Photographer.” Her tagline now contains keywords to help her show up in search results for “wedding photographer.”
2. Targeted hashtags
Have you ever felt like the only people you can attract are your competitors? It’s so common on Instagram. To understand how to get around that, let’s look at why it happens.
Hashtags are basically keywords used to describe and categorize our content. People use hashtags to find specific topics, and we draw in others that use the same hashtags as us. That’s why we should shift our hashtag game from categorizing our content to targeting our ideal audience. This is one example of why you need to have your ideal audience narrowed down. Know who you’re talking to so you can tailor your content and hashtags to those people.
To figure out what your audience is using is simple: look! Find a few accounts of people that would be your dream client, and look at what hashtags they’re using. Make a list of hashtags that all your dream clients have in common and work those into your strategy. This step takes some time and isn’t something you can throw together. Set aside some time, research each hashtag and make sure it’s not too popular or not popular enough (hashtags with 5k-500k is the sweet spot), and make sure that the posts that show up in the search results would compliment yours.
Example: I did an Instagram Audit for a fellow VA and noticed she was using #VA. Well...VA can stand for a multitude of things and not all of them were entirely appropriate. So please, do your research.
3. Posting at optimized times
The final tip to getting more visible on Instagram is to schedule your posts at optimized times. It’s easier than you might believe!
Simply head over to your Instagram app on your phone. From your profile, click on the Insights button. Within those insights you can find helpful information such as account growth and impressions, follower demographics, and when those people are most often logged in and active on Instagram. Schedule your posts for those peak hours.
Do you know how hashtag search results show “top posts” and “most recent?” If your audience is logging on around 6pm and you’ve just published a post, guess who’s showing up in the most recent posts? Bingo.
Remember to be flexible and willing to adjust your strategies. If something isn’t working, adjust your strategies and give it another go.
